Context
This lamp has a round reservoir with a ring handle that has a central groove. The handle is attached to the wall above and below the reservoir’s sharp carination (1). The pour hole is slightly off center and is surrounded by a flat rim. The ring foot is slightly concave (with an exterior diameter of 3.2 cm). The small, round nozzle (1.62 cm long) is tapered and has a U-shaped wick hole. NOTES: 1. The shape corresponds to M. Conticello de’ Spagnolis and E. De Carolis, Le lucerne di bronzo, Musei della Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana Inventari e Studi 1 (Vatican City, 1986) 23 and 28-30, nos. 2-4; compare N. Valenza Mele, Catalogo delle lucerne in bronzo: Museo Nazionale Archeologico di Napoli (Rome, 1981) 14, no. 6, type 4a, which Mele noted was used over a long period, but those from Pompeii are probably from the first century CE.
